We don't need no stinkin' shuttle!
To celebrate the safe return of the Discovery, I thought that I would link to an excellent article that calls into question the necessity of the whole collective breath holding that we are just now letting out.
It's a bit lengthy, but well worth it if you are interested in the topic. I don't necessarily agree with the viewpoint, but the argument is well made.

i kind of just don't get it. Sure it's given us Microwaves and stuff that we use, but wtf would ANYONE want to live on the moon or on mars, when there sure as hell isn't any oxygen or any evidence of anything BUT dirt? They can't even find evidence of water.
Why spend BILLIONS on trying to achieve something so pointless? Why kill off the occupants of now 2 space shuttles in the hope of a fruitless and pointless idea?
Hrm....
I just wish they'd come up with better suits for the astronauts. Not very sexy. So much for men in uniforms! I mean really, is NASA not watching the latest science fiction movies out there as a guide? Who cares about foam and tiles? The real work is in the wears! ;-)
Even more, exploration seems to be a human trait. As a species, we've never completely understood the idea "just because you can do it, doesn't mean that you should do it.
So until the end of time, we'll be sticking our fingers into pencil sharpeners, dating good-looking but high-maintenance ego-monkeys and strapping ourselves to mega-firecrackers aimed 'out there'.
Well, I tried to read the whole article but I started to nod off.
I think whatever you said.
:)
I think we need to privatize immigration so when illegals run jump and swim to Mars, our good friends at Enron, Haliburton, Richter Dynamics, and GE can deport them back to Earth so my tax dollars don't have to. Better those tax dollars go to build a Martian highway or an aqueduct or something.
