Choppin' Broccoli

"When I was at the store today, I noticed that broccoli spears are, like, 30% cheaper than chopped broccoli."

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah," (getting excited) "and I thought it would cost more. I mean, with chopped broccoli, parts are parts. Who knows what you're eating. But spears are mostly whole."

"Mmm."

"So I checked the bag to see if maybe it weighed less? But there's the same amount in it. Then I checked the price per ouce, and it was significantly less!"

"Oh."

"I wonder why it costs more for chopped broccoli? It doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I should write Safeway?"

"Hmfrbronsad..."

"What?"

"Nothing."

My wife went to bed early last night. I wonder if I bored her?

It depends, were you the one talking about Broccoli?

the cost of (chopping) labor reflected in the price?

Sorry folks, wasn't very clear.

I am clearly the "touched" one of the family - I don't think R would ever start such an asinine conversation.

So, did you buy the chopped of the un-chopped? Or did you do the wise thing and not buy either as there is clearly a lethal conspiracy linked to the price of broccoli?

Chopped broccoli is less fress than unchopped ones. They trim off the wilted and yellow bits, and repack them for fast sale.

See? My husband would go for the chopped broccoli... cheap and saves time!

lol! I am sure she wasn't bored. Broccoli is fascinating ! I buy the chopped if I am in a hurry or entertaining - it saves time. But as a rule, I buy the spears. *yawn* I think I will go to bed early too....

shuffles off.....

=)

Who eats broccoli?

Fascinating story, really. Can't wait until your post about beets shows up. Tee hee!

Oh, my, too funny! I even read this one to my husband. He'd do something like that. Except that I'd probably be fascinated (since it isn't a conversation about diapers or snotty noses) and we'd go into an entire conversation about veggies in general and how we should start a garden...

TE - If there were a broccoli sweathouse somewhere where little children toiled with big knives cutting broccoli, I might buy it - but I am sure that there is a machine that chops it up in a quarter of a second and costs less than a volvo.

Datamonkey - Possible, but she's a smart tack, she is. It would take far more to send R into academic vaporlock.

Marshal - The spears, of course. I love broccoli, and the more whole, the better.

Diva - I think you may have read the post backwards - the chopped actually cost less. But I like your logic - that's what I was thinking.

Lisa - Usually we buy fresh and steam. But I've grown lazy.

Kara - My post about beets will be one word: Yuuuuuuck.

PSUmom - To be honest, it was a nice break from snotty noses and sonograms. Or so I thought. Methinks R is still into this whole "kid" thing. Go figure!

Diva - I meant MORE. Fell into the same trap, I guess.
